Dum­fries and Gal­loway — Halls of Fame

As one of the Roof­less part­ners, UZ Arts worked in Dum­fries and Gal­loway with three vil­lage halls in Eccle­fechan, Gate­house and Moni­aive in a cel­e­bra­tion that raised their roofs!

Begin­ning in July 2012, three teams of local artists with UZ Arts project man­ager, Peter Ren­wick, worked with the local com­mu­ni­ties to pro­vide inspi­ra­tion and cre­ative con­tent for the three vil­lage halls. This was the build up to two Halls of Fame per­for­mance week­ends on 7th-​9th and 15th-​16th Sep­tem­ber 2012 .

The first week­end, 7th-​9th, saw the the results of vil­lage hall work­shops as per­for­mances and fes­tiv­i­ties in each vil­lage. The open days included street arts, bak­ing treats, BBQ, arts & crafts, cir­cus work­shops and Buzzbeak, the inter­ac­tive musi­cal ani­ma­tronic condor.

Dur­ing the week­end of 15th and 16th Sep­tem­ber, each hall had shown a simul­ta­ne­ous pro­gramme of work tak­ing the form of an inter­ac­tive music and dance installation.

On the Sat­ur­day 15th, Dum­fries town cen­tre was opened up to Roof­less on the High Street with street arts and enter­tain­ment and at Youth Beatz music fes­ti­val at Dock Park there was a spe­cial appear­ance of Buzzbeak.

At the finale event on Sun­day 16th, a ‘vir­tual’ hall was con­structed in Dum­fries pro­vid­ing a cen­tral focus. Each par­tic­i­pat­ing hall was invited to bring an ele­ment of their pro­gramme to form part of the finale event in Dum­fries’ pedes­trian High Street and Greyfri­ars Kirk. The event was cen­tred on music and dance, cre­at­ing an expe­ri­ence for par­tic­i­pants and audi­ence that is unique to Dum­fries and Gal­loway. Engag­ing with fam­ily audi­ences, it gave many oppor­tu­ni­ties for younger groups to con­tribute and participate.

Buzzbeak has plans to tour the other Roof­less part­ners in 2013 before embark­ing on a Euro­pean tour through the IN SITU net­work in 2014.
